Olive Tree Loft / Eressos, Lesbos
Some places are discovered. Others are uncovered.
Just a few steps from the ancient Platanos Square, the living heart of Eressos, the Olive Tree Loft occupies a place where village life unfolds every day of the year. Beneath the shade of the centuries-old plane tree, conversations continue from morning coffee to late evening wine. From here, the eye follows the valley toward Skala and the Aegean Sea, only five kilometers away. Unlike the coastline, whose rhythm belongs to the summer, the village breathes quietly through every season. Calm, yet continuously alive.
The Olive Tree Loft is a retreat at the very center of this life.
A place to withdraw without disappearing. A place to arrive at oneself - or at one another. Whether alone, gathering one's thoughts, or together in love, it offers the rare luxury of simply being. To write, paint, think, create - or simply sit beside the wood-burning stove, watching the fire. To look up through the courtyard and follow the stars as they pass above the olive tree. Solitude and togetherness, held gently in the heart of an ancient village where life quietly continues around you.
When we first entered the house, it felt less like a renovation and more like an archaeological excavation. Behind its modest façade, large parts of the interior had disappeared beneath more than a meter of earth and stone. The rear room and the hidden courtyard had been sealed away completely, their only doorway walled shut decades ago. Only the crown of a single olive tree rising above the roof hinted that another world existed behind these walls.
With every layer removed, the house slowly revealed itself.
Our task was never to recreate the past, but to reconnect its fragments. The olive tree became the heart of the project. Around it, the house was composed once again - a light timber upper floor inspired by the craftsmanship of wooden boatbuilding, an open courtyard reclaimed for plants and climbing vines, old stone meeting contemporary construction with quiet confidence.
The beauty of architecture lies in bringing old and new together until they become something entirely new.
The Olive Tree Loft is not a monument to history. It is a place where history continues.
A house that embraces silence without retreating from life. A house that allows the outside world to fall away while remaining only moments from the village square. Ancient in its foundations, uncompromisingly contemporary in its spirit.
Welcome to the Olive Tree Loft.

“If you take Greece apart, in the end, you will be left with an olive tree, a vineyard, and a boat. Which means, with these items, you can rebuild Greece.” Odysseas Elytis
